What is Reiki?

Overview

Have you been feeling sluggish or dealing with depression and anxiety? Or have you been experiencing pain for a while now and are ready to get back to feeling better? A reiki session with us might be just what you need for overall wellness. Here's what you should know about Reiki, a non-invasive functional medicine practice for wellness and pain management.

What is Reiki?

A form of functional medicine, the practice of Reiki, traces its roots back to Japan. The word Reiki is a combination of two Japanese words: Rei, which means "universal life" and Ki, which is "energy." Reiki is a non-invasive practice that deals with removing blockages that exist within a patient's energy channels.

By removing energetic blockages—that are responsible for the occurrence of diseases and bodily injuries—reiki results in free-flowing energy channels that have a strong "ki" or energy. Having strong ki allows for your body's own natural healing mechanisms to kick in, resulting in an increase in your overall health and wellness.

What Are the Benefits of Reiki?

Recent studies show that there are multiple benefits to undergoing a reiki session. As a non-invasive procedure that doesn't involve narcotics, Reiki has been shown to be quite effective in:

  • Being used for pain management
  • Decreasing the effects of depression and anxiety
  • Activates the parasympathetic nervous system, relaxing you
  • Managing the symptoms of chronic health conditions
  • Reduction in levels of pain following postoperative surgery and pregnancy

Patients can feel the effects of Reiki after just one session, which is why most people opt for regular reiki sessions to improve and maintain their new level of overall well-being.

What to Expect During a Reiki Session

If you've never been to a reiki appointment before, you might be wondering what to expect during your first appointment. A reiki master or practitioner at Officite Demo Integrated Medicine will ask you a series of questions regarding your current health status to determine the areas where energetic blocks exist. From there, you will be asked to lie down on your back on a massage table where the practitioner will place their hands lightly on or just above your body and begin making their way down your body's energy lines in a slow movement of different standardized Reiki hand positions.

Some patients report feeling warm or tingling sensations, but this is not always the case. You will, however, leave a single Reiki session, which is usually 60 or 90 minutes in length, feeling relaxed and calm not just physically, but mentally and emotionally as well.
